A diamond grading report can make a major purchase feel more objective, but only if you know what the document does—and what it does not do. The best approach is to treat the report as a technical description of one loose stone, then combine it with images, measurements, expert guidance and your own priorities.
This guide explains how Australian buyers can read a diamond grading report with confidence, compare stones more fairly and identify the questions worth asking before committing.
Start with the report’s identity
Before comparing grades, confirm exactly what you are reading. Look for the laboratory name, report number, issue date and a clear description of whether the diamond is natural or laboratory-grown. Report formats and terminology vary between laboratories, so two documents that look similar may not use identical grading systems.
For a natural diamond report, the document will usually identify the stone’s shape and cutting style, measurements, carat weight, colour, clarity and—where the laboratory provides one—cut grade. It may also show proportions, finish, fluorescence, clarity characteristics and detected treatments.
GIA explains that its natural Diamond Grading Report includes a full 4Cs assessment and plotted clarity diagram. Its other report types can contain different combinations of information. That is a useful reminder to read the report type, not just the laboratory logo.
Read the 4Cs as a set, not a scorecard
The 4Cs—carat, colour, clarity and cut—are a shared language for describing diamond quality. They are not a simple ladder where every higher grade automatically creates a more beautiful or more suitable stone.
- Carat is weight, not face-up size. Two diamonds of the same carat weight can look different in diameter or outline because their proportions differ.
- Colour grades describe the relative absence of colour in diamonds graded on a D-to-Z scale. The visible difference between neighbouring grades can be subtle and may interact with the setting metal and viewing conditions.
- Clarity considers internal features and surface characteristics. The grade matters, but the type, position and visibility of an inclusion can also affect how a specific stone looks and, in some cases, how it should be set.
- Cut describes how effectively a standard round brilliant’s proportions and finish work together under the grading laboratory’s system. For fancy shapes such as ovals, emerald cuts and radiants, many reports do not provide an overall cut grade, so video, measurements and proportion assessment become especially important.
A balanced stone can be a better choice than one selected for a single headline grade. Decide which characteristics you are willing to see and which matter most for the design, then compare within that brief.
Use measurements to understand visual size and shape
Measurements often reveal more than carat weight alone. A report generally lists length, width and depth in millimetres. For elongated shapes, dividing length by width gives a length-to-width ratio, which helps describe whether the outline is broader or more slender.
There is no universal “best” ratio. A graceful oval for one person may feel too narrow for another, while an emerald cut may be chosen for elegant length rather than maximum spread. Measurements should be considered alongside symmetry, facet pattern and how the stone appears in motion.
Depth percentage, table percentage, crown and pavilion information can help an expert assess proportions, but they should not be reduced to one online rule. Two stones with similar numbers can still show different light return, contrast or bow-tie patterns. Ask to see clear, neutral video of the actual diamond whenever possible.

Check clarity details, finish and fluorescence
A plotted clarity diagram maps representative inclusions and blemishes on reports that include one. The symbols are useful for locating characteristics, but the plot is not a photograph and does not tell you exactly how visible a feature will be without magnification. Read it with the written “clarity characteristics” list and inspect the actual stone.
Polish describes the quality of the facet surfaces; symmetry describes the precision of facet shape and alignment. These finish grades are separate from the overall cut grade. They can help distinguish otherwise similar candidates, but should still be weighed against the diamond’s appearance and total specification.
Fluorescence describes a diamond’s reaction to ultraviolet radiation under defined testing conditions. It is not automatically positive or negative. Its practical relevance depends on strength, colour and the individual stone, so ask for a visual assessment rather than rejecting or choosing a diamond from the fluorescence line alone.
Verify the report—and match it to the stone
Use the issuing laboratory’s official verification service. For example, GIA Report Check allows a report number to be checked against information held in GIA’s database. Compare the online record with the document you were given, including measurements and grades.
Some diamonds carry a microscopic laser inscription on the girdle. Where present, a jeweller can help you view it under magnification and compare it with the report number. An inscription is a useful matching tool, but it should be considered with the report data and professional inspection—not treated as a substitute for them.
For laboratory-grown diamonds, confirm that the document clearly discloses the origin and read the laboratory’s current service description. GIA’s laboratory-grown diamond services, for example, use formats and terminology designed to distinguish laboratory-grown material from natural-diamond reporting. Other laboratories may use different scales or report names.
Understand what a grading report does not tell you
A grading report is not a retail price list, a valuation, a warranty or a guarantee of future resale value. It does not assess whether the finished ring suits your lifestyle, whether a particular setting protects vulnerable points, or whether you personally prefer the stone’s facet pattern.
It also should not be confused with documentation for the finished jewellery piece. A loose-stone report describes the diamond at the time it was examined. A valuation may address a different purpose and date. - Compare the report’s measurements and grades with the seller’s listing.
- Ask whether treatments are disclosed and where they appear on the report.
- Review clear images or video of the actual stone, not only a sample image.
- For fancy shapes, assess outline, facet pattern, bow-tie or windowing and face-up dimensions.
- Ask how the proposed setting works with the stone’s shape, clarity features and everyday wear.
- Clarify exactly which documents will accompany the loose stone and finished piece.
